Selection criteria

Which 3M metal adhesive tape fits the task?

Start with the function: should the tape mask a surface or damp a vibrating structure? Then check the foil backing, adhesive, liner and required supply format. The listed damping tapes 434, 435 and 436 combine aluminium foil with a viscoelastic polymer; 3M aluminium tape 431 instead uses an acrylic adhesive for masking and protection tasks.

METAL FOIL TAPE SELECTION

Masking or damping: match the tape construction to the task

A metal backing alone does not determine what a tape does. For masking and protection, check the specific surface and the subsequent process; for vibrating components, the documented damping function of the individual version matters. Foil thickness, adhesive and liner also differ between product families. For selection advice, tell us the component, substrate, load and desired roll or strip format; Krückemeyer GmbH will assess conversion for your application.

QUESTIONS ABOUT 3M METAL ADHESIVE TAPES

How do 3M metal adhesive tape and 3M aluminium tape differ?

Aluminium tape identifies the foil backing more precisely; metal adhesive tape is the broader range name. The function of the individual product also matters. 3M aluminium tape 431 uses an acrylic adhesive and is described for masking and protection. The 3M damping tapes 434, 435 and 436 use a viscoelastic polymer adhesive to reduce vibration and noise. Compare each tape’s construction and intended use rather than treating the names as equivalent.

Which 3M metal adhesive tapes are intended for vibration damping?

3M damping tapes 434, 435 and 436 are described for reducing vibration and resonance noise. They have an aluminium foil backing and a viscoelastic polymer adhesive; the versions differ in construction and thickness, among other things. Suitability for your component depends on its geometry, surface and loading. Include these details in your inquiry so that the choice can be assessed for the specific product.

Is every 3M metal adhesive tape electrically conductive?

No. A metal backing does not establish an electrical function for the entire bonded assembly. Conductivity, shielding and insulation require separate checks of the specific tape construction, electrical contact and product information. This category includes metal adhesive tapes for different tasks, including masking and vibration damping. If an electrical property is essential for your application, specify the requirement and have the relevant product assessed.

In what formats can 3M metal adhesive tape be supplied for processing?

Krückemeyer GmbH describes rolls and strips as possible supply formats for 3M metal adhesive tape. Suitable dimensions and formats depend on the selected tape, the component and your processing step. This does not constitute a general promise of any specific custom form. Tell us the required width, desired supply format and intended use so that suitable conversion can be assessed.
