Choose 3M floor marking tape by task

First consider how much wear the marked area receives from warehouse equipment and traffic, and whether routes may change later. 3M describes tapes 971 and 971L for abrasion in shipping, receiving and storage areas. Both combine a vinyl backing with a rubber-resin adhesive; 971L also has a liner for die-cut shapes.

Colour, width and the specific floor surface also matter. Before application, the floor should be clean, dry and as smooth as possible. Check suitability for your floor and cleaning process in the intended application.

SELECTION FOR FLOOR SURFACES

Which 3M version suits your marking task?

The self-wound 971 is intended for straight lines applied from a roll. If the markings need to be die-cut into shapes, 971L offers a liner for that process. 3M describes strong adhesion to most floors and clean removal from many surfaces; both must be checked on the actual floor. For advice, tell us the floor covering, surface condition, traffic or pallet abrasion, required colour and shape, and cleaning method.

QUESTIONS ABOUT 3M FLOOR MARKING TAPE

What is the difference between 3M floor marking tapes 971 and 971L?

971L is the version with a liner that allows die-cut shapes to be produced. 971 is self-wound and intended for markings applied from a roll. 3M describes both ranges for floors exposed to warehouse equipment and traffic in shipping, receiving and storage areas. First choose the required marking shape, then check the colour, width and floor surface against the specific product version.

How should the floor be prepared before application?

The floor should be clean, dry and as smooth as possible. 3M identifies oil, grease, moisture, wax, coating residues and dirt as possible obstacles to adhesion. Cleaning products should leave no residue on the bonding surface; allow the floor to dry thoroughly before applying the tape. Freshly sealed floors also need to dry. Check that the tape suits your particular floor and cleaning process before marking a larger area.

Can 3M floor marking tape be removed cleanly later?

3M describes clean removal of 971 and 971L from many surfaces, but this is not a general promise for every floor. Lift the tape gently at one corner and pull it perpendicular to the surface. If adhesive residue remains, select a suitable cleaning method and first test its compatibility with the floor covering in an inconspicuous spot. If routes may change later, include removal in your product selection and testing.
